Wat Prasi Ratana Sasdaram (The temple of the Emerald Buddha) |
Wat Prasi Ratana Sasdaram is a royal chapel located in the Grand Palace , which was constructed by royal command of King Rama I in 1782 A.D. His intention was to use royal chapel as a "Buddhawas" and to keep the Emerald Buddha.
To use the royal chapel as a "Buddhawas" means that there are no monks living in that temple. The Emerald Buddha is kept in this exquisite chapel.
The temple of the Emerald Buddha, both interior and exterior decorations, was elaborately designed and exquisitely built. Besides the beautiful church, grand Mondob (a square structure with four arches and a pyramidal roof), a crystal pagoda, Pra Tepamit abode, curvy balcony, or battlements, are also beautiful and rich of Arts of Buddhist, architectures, and exquisiteness. These are the heritage of "the high class Thai Handicraft" that create work beautifully as if magically created by Gods.

On the walls of curvy balcony around the church, there are paintings, painted by great artist of the city of Bangkok, of the story of Ramayana. A very interesting feature is a scaled Angkor Wat, which is also placed in this royal chapel.
After it was built in 1782, the temple of the Emerald Buddha has been under four restorations, which are;
1. At 50th anniversary of the city of Bangkok, during the reign of King Rama III
2. At 100th anniversary of the city of Bangkok, during the reign of King Rama V
3. At 150th anniversary of the city of Bangkok, during the reign of King Rama VII
4. At 200th anniversary of the city of Bangkok, during the reign of King Rama IX in 1982. The last restoration actually start in 1976 and it took 5 years to complete. His Majesty the King gave his royal appointment to Princess Sirinthorn to be a Chairperson of the committee for the restoration of the temple of the Emerald Buddha.
